On the 28th of July, 2020 at approximately 1:30 PM, a Member of the Brandon Police Service conducted a traffic stop on #1 Hwy, just west of the City and became involved in an Unlawful Transportation of Liquor in a Motor Vehicle Investigation, contrary to the provisions of the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act.
During the course of the investigation, a large quantity of illicit drugs were discovered within the vehicle. Two males, aged 41 and 43 years, from the Province of Ontario, were subsequently taken into custody for Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. In total, 76 Kilograms of illicit drugs were located and seized from the cargo area of the vehicle.
After preliminary presumptive testing, the illicit substances are believed to be 50 Kilograms of MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy, and 26 Kilograms of a variation of substances combined with Fentanyl. The illicit drugs were packaged in 1 Kilogram quantities. These seizures are subject to further testing to confirm the identity of the substances.
Based on this testing, it is believed the estimated wholesale value of the seizure is in excess of three million dollars if sold by the Kilogram. The “street value” of the seizure may potentially be five times that amount.
The two accused appeared for a bail hearing on July 29th, 2020 and were subsequently remanded into custody. They both stand charged with two counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking MDMA (Ecstasy) and Fentanyl, as well as two counts of Trafficking MDMA (Ecstasy) and Fentanyl, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
Illegal drugs of this nature are extremely dangerous to the users and our communities. The number of Fentanyl related deaths continue to rise in our communities and across the country. The Brandon Police Service is committed to enforcing the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act in an effort to combat this ever growing epidemic to keep our community safe.
This is a significant illicit drug seizure that was stopped from entering our communities and has no doubt impacted the drug trade. We will continue to remain vigilant in our battle against the drug trade.
In addition to our efforts locally, the Brandon Police Service participates in province wide crime reduction strategies and specialized training through the Province of Manitoba Department of Justice. These initiatives involve a collaborative enforcement effort with other Police agencies in Manitoba including the RCMP, Winnipeg Police Service, Morden Police Service, Winkler Police Service, Manitoba First Nations Police Service and Rivers Police Service with the goal of taking a proactive approach to crime reduction across the Province.
