Pursuit/ Driving While Ability Impaired

On January 19, 2020, at approximately 8:20 pm, police attempted to stop a vehicle after observing it fail to stop at stop signs, and speed in the downtown area. After querying the license plate, police learned that the registered owner of the vehicle was a suspended driver.

The driver of the vehicle would not stop for police and a pursuit ensued north bound on 18th street N. At 8:23 pm, the suspect travelled out of the City of Brandon. BPS members pursued the vehicle on rural highways and roads, which eventually took them through several municipalities including Riverdale Municipality, which falls in the jurisdiction of Rivers Police Service, who were notified and able to assist.

The suspect vehicle traveled through the community of Rapid City toward PR -355 where it turned westbound.

Members of the Yellowhead RCMP assisted at the intersection of Hwy 21 and PR – 355 by deploying a spike belt. After driving over the spike belt at approximately 9:14 pm, the suspect vehicle continued west bound for less than .5 km, before stopping.

The driver and three passengers were arrested.

The driver, a 31-year-old male, displayed signs of impairment. He was lodged at Brandon Correctional Centre and will appear in court today on charges of Driving while Ability Impaired, Flight While Pursued by Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Fail to Comply with Recognizance X 3, and numerous charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

The three passengers had been consuming alcohol within the vehicle, and were issued fines under the LGCCA. One of the passengers was also the registered owner of the vehicle.
