Year of the Garden 2022

April 8, 2022

Brandon, MB - The City of Brandon is proud to join municipalities across Canada in declaring 2022 the Year of the Garden. The Year of the Garden celebrates the Centennial of Canada’s horticulture sector. Gardens and gardening contribute to the quality of life of our municipality and create safe and healthy places where people can come together.

To celebrate the Year of the Garden, City of Brandon Parks & Recreation Services, along with community supporters, are planning events and activities throughout the year. The highlight of these celebrations will take place on National Garden Day on Saturday, June 18th, 2022 at Stanley Park (1410 Princess Avenue). This event will feature live music, food, kid’s entertainment, and giveaways including vegetable plants and sunflowers.

The week leading up to the National Garden Day will be a week of Garden Days from June 11 to 19th, 2022. Throughout the week, there will be gardening workshops, promotions at participating businesses, and recognition of our local Garden Heroes who contribute to Brandon’s garden culture.

There will also be social media-based contests, including encouraging gardeners to #PlantRed to show their Canadian pride, and plant sunflowers in their gardens to help facilitate native bee populations. Also, as the sunflower is Ukraine's national flower, planting sunflowers is a way to show support for Ukraine*.

*On March 2nd, 2022, the City released a statement that Mayor & Council stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and on March 5th, the City raised the Ukrainian flag at City Hall for 4 days and 4 nights as part of showing our solidarity and support for Ukraine.
