Brandon Urban Aboriginal Peoples' Council Releases Revitalized Strategic Plan

September 26, 2024

Brandon, MB – The Brandon Urban Aboriginal Peoples' Council (BUAPC) is pleased to announce its updated Strategic Plan for 2024-2029. This cultural blueprint details the organization's four key focus areas as it strives for inclusivity and equity for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

Indigenization: BUAPC seeks to amplify Indigenous voices in our community.  It supports local diversity, equity, and inclusive hiring policies, and encourages the integration of Indigenous ways of knowing and doing in both community policy and practice.

Relationships & Advocacy: BUAPC pursues the cultivation of robust partnerships in recognition and response to the needs of Indigenous individuals and families in and around Brandon.

Community Presence & Engagement: BUAPC endorses events that honour Indigenous cultures and bridge connections among Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members.

Public Awareness & Education: BUAPC is committed to improving awareness and facilitating education around Indigenous matters by supporting the creation of educational resources and coordinating education initiatives in the community.

Brandon’s upcoming Truth and Reconciliation Week (TRW) 2024 is the fourth annual cultural event which addresses all four areas of the 2024-2029 Strategic Plan.  The week includes opportunities for traditional teachings, a commemorative community walk, ceremony, and promotes awareness of the lasting effects of residential schools in Canada.  During TRW events, safe spaces are provided for residential school survivors to share their experiences and time is made to honour those children who never made it home.

These priorities are also evident in BUAPC’s backing of recurring events in Brandon, including National Indigenous Peoples’ Day (June 21) and Our Journey: Celebrating Indigenous Student Success (end of May), both held on the land at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. Additionally, BUAPC supports national initiatives like the Moosehide Campaign (May 16) at Princess Park, as well as local grassroots efforts throughout the year.

The updated plan serves as a guide for BUAPC’s ongoing commitment to ensuring urban Indigenous people are represented in their community. BUAPC is dedicated to actively contributing to efforts that enhance the lives of Indigenous people, which involves collaboration among Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals, organizations, institutions, businesses, and governments.

"The introduction of this strategic plan signifies our dedication to nurturing an inclusive and equitable environment. Empowering Indigenous narratives and strengthening cultural endurance are key to building a united, resilient Brandon," mentioned Kris Desjarlais, Chair of BUAPC.
