2021 Flood Protection Subsidy Program Update

September 16, 2021

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon’s Planning & Buildings Department is pleased to announce that the Flood Protection Subsidy Program has been fully allocated for this year. This program has proven to be a tremendous success with over 200 total fixtures installed in Brandon residences.

City Council initially approved $100,000 in funding for this program, which was then expanded to $400,000 through the year due to high demand. This program provided subsidy funding for property owners wanting to install either a sump pump and pit and/or a back-water valve in their home or business. As part of the City’s overall drainage strategy, the installation of these fixtures has made many homes in the city more resilient to high rainfall events.

The 2021 program funded up to 75% of the total materials and installation cost, up to a maximum of $2,500 for the sump pump and pit, and up to a maximum of $1,500 for the backwater valve.

New applicants to this program will be placed on a waitlist for this year's program in case a previous applicant decides to withdraw their application. This waitlist will not automatically roll applicants into the program for 2022. The city is exploring bringing the program back for 2022 with the final decision to be made by City Council at budget deliberations in early 2022. Once confirmed, further messaging will be announced next spring.

For residents who have enquiries regarding the program, please contact the Planning & Buildings Department at planning@brandon.ca or 204-729-2110.
