Boil Water Advisory Issued to a Portion of the Brandon Water System

October 26, 2020

Brandon, MB -- The City of Brandon Sewer & Water Section wishes to advise the public that a water main break has led to the loss of water pressure in the 400 block of 23rd Street in the City of Brandon.  The area affected includes ten homes, the Sunrise Credit Union and the Sioux Valley First Nation School.  As distribution depressurization can compromise the safety of the water supply, as a precaution, a boil water advisory has been issued to ensure public health protection, for the designated area only.

The City of Brandon is currently working to advise all water users affected by the boil water advisory and will be distributing a copy of the public notice. In addition, a copy of the notice has been posted on the City of Brandon website and will be updated accordingly.

Water users in the designated area must be advised that all water used for consumption be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute. This includes water used for drinking, preparing food, making ice, washing vegetables and fruit, brushing teeth, and making infant formula. As an alternative, individuals may also choose to use a known safe source of water such as bottled water. Water may be used for general domestic purposes including hand washing, bathing and showering (provided the water is not swallowed), dishwashing and laundry.

The Boil Water Advisory will remain in effect until the following actions are taken:

  • Repairs to the water line are complete
  • Two sets of bacteriological tests in the affected area, including a minimum of one distribution water sample, submitted 24 hours apart with results meeting regulatory standards; and
  • Comply with any other directives issued by the Office of Drinking Water or Medical Officer of Health.

Once the above conditions are met to the satisfaction of the Medical Officer of Health the advisory will be rescinded. At that time, users in the designated area will give notice by City of Brandon staff that the conditions that led to the issuance of the advisory have been successfully addressed, the advisory has been rescinded and that normal use of the water can resume.

If residents or businesses have questions, they can contact the City of Brandon Sewer and Water Section during business hours at 204-729-2285.

The overall City of Brandon water system continues to have safe drinking water. The issue is only in the 400 block of 23rd Street.

The City of Brandon thanks the public for its cooperation during this time.
