Candidate FAQ
Where do I apply for a job posting?
Do you accept resumes by email or in person?
To make sure your application is received and considered, please apply through the Dayforce Career Portal for the specific position you're interested in. If you need help with the online process or require an alternate format, our HR team is glad to assist.
Do I need to include a cover letter?
Unless a posting specifies otherwise, a resume and cover letter are required. A cover letter is your chance to tell us why you're interested and how your experience fits – we encourage you to include one.
How will I know if I've been selected for an interview?
After the competition closes, our hiring team reviews all applications against the qualifications listed in each posting. If you're selected to move forward, someone from HR will contact you directly. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted, and timing can vary depending on the position.
Can I ask questions about a position before I apply?
Absolutely – we encourage it. If you'd like to better understand a role before applying, or you want an update on your application after the closing date, reach out to HR by email or phone. We're happy to help.
What is a behavioural interview, and how do I prepare?
The City of Brandon primarily uses behavioural interview questions – ones that begin with “Tell us about a time when…” or “Describe a situation where…”. We ask these because past experience is often the best indicator of how someone will approach similar situations in the future.
To help you prepare, we offer an Interview Preparation Guide that walks through the STAR method, and you can book a prep session with our HR team to learn more before your interview. Remember: we're not looking for perfect answers - we want to learn about you and how your skills fit the role.
What can I expect from the interview?
If you're invited to interview, we'll let you know the date, time, and location, roughly how long to expect, and who will be on the interview panel. We'll also tell you in advance if there's a test or presentation involved, so you can come prepared.
How can I request an accommodation during the hiring process?
The City of Brandon strives to remove accessibility barriers during pre-employment and employment in the workplace. If a barrier cannot be removed, the City will make every effort to provide reasonable accommodations for affected employees.
You can request an accommodation at any stage - including an alternate format of any document - by contacting HR at 204-729-2240 or hr@brandon.ca. We're here to support you.
What kinds of positions does the City of Brandon hire for?
We hire across a wide range of occupations - from public works, parks and recreation, to finance, planning, public safety, and administration - including full-time and non-permanent roles. New postings appear on the Career Portal regularly, so check back often.
