Batteries

Every day, Canadians rely on batteries to power their devices, from smoke detectors and laptops to e-bikes and toys, keeping us connected, moving, and entertained. But with convenience comes responsibility. If not handled or disposed of properly, those same batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, can pose a risk to people, property, and the environment.

Help us keep everyone and the planet safe by properly handling your batteries!

Did you know?

At Eastview Landfill we have dealt with landfill cell fires and fires inside our collection trucks due to batteries being disposed of incorrectly?

Follow these battery safety tips:

  • NEVER throw away batteries in the waste, recycling, or organics carts.
  • When buying new or replacement batteries, choose reputable, certified brands.
  • Always follow manufacturer instructions.
  • Only use the battery type (and charger) designed for your device.
  • Don’t charge batteries or devices near exits or under your bed or pillows.
  • Keep batteries out of direct sunlight or in hot cars.
  • Collect batteries in non-metal containers and store them safely.
  • Protect battery terminals with tape or in plastic bags before storing or recycling.
  • Drop Off at Eastview Landfill, City Hall, AR McDiarmid building or other participating Recycle Your Batteries, Canada!  locations (at least every 3 months) – visit recycleyourbatteries.ca for more convenient locations near you!

Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! Program accepts all household batteries weighing up to 5kg (11lbs) each along with batteries from e-bikes and e-scooters.

Eastview Landfill also accepts used vehicle batteries for safe disposal outside of this program.
