18th St N (PTH 10) and Braecrest Drive

In partnership with the Province of Manitoba, construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of 18th Street North (PTH 10) and Braecrest Drive is going to begin in 2027.

This project will enhance functionality, improve safety and efficiency of both vehicle and non-vehicle traffic flow at this key intersection.

The existing four-way intersection at 18th Street North (PTH 10) and Braecrest Drive will be replaced with a roundabout. The City of Brandon and the Province of Manitoba (Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure) are partnering on the project, and construction is planned to begin in 2027. The new roundabout will include:

  • A roundabout with approximately 50 metres across, with a raised central island and a mountable truck apron designed so large trucks, including semi-trailers can get through

  • A slower, steadier flow of traffic, with vehicles travelling around the roundabout at about 30 km/h

  • Raised islands on each approach (north, south, east, and west) that guide drivers into the roundabout and give pedestrians a place to pause so they can cross one direction of traffic at a time

  • Marked pedestrian crossings on the north, east, and west sides of the roundabout, connecting the neighbourhood west of 18th Street North to the existing multi-use pathways. No crossing is planned on the south side to avoid stopping northbound traffic on the steep hill.

  • Two northbound lanes and one southbound lane on 18th Street North through the intersection

  • Lower posted speeds approaching the roundabout: 60 km/h on 18th Street North and 50 km/h on Braecrest Drive

  • Replacement of underground sewer and water infrastructure

  • Supporting work such as extending the culvert on Braecrest Drive, relocating utilities, new curbs, and restoring boulevards with topsoil and sod or seed

In 2019, the City of Brandon partnered with Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure to develop a recommended functional design for the Braecrest Drive Corridor.

The study examined current and future traffic operations, vehicle and pedestrian safety, and speeding along Braecrest Drive, including its unsignalized intersections with 1st Street North and 18th Street North.

  • Late 2018 - Meetings and online public engagement gathered feedback on traffic, safety, speeding, and pedestrian and cycling connections along Braecrest Drive.

  • February 2019 - Conceptual design options were presented at a public open house. Following this open house, a roundabout concept for 18th Street North and Braecrest Drive was developed in response to public feedback and long-term traffic challenges at the intersection.

  • May 2019 - The recommended design was presented at a second public open house.

  • June 2019 - WSP completed the Functional Design Report for the Braecrest Drive Corridor.

  • November 2025 - The City of Brandon in partnership with Manitoba Transportation issued a request for proposals to complete the detailed design of the roundabout option.

  • November 3, 2026 - Public information session at Brandon’s Community Sportsplex (4:00 to 7:00 p.m.) where residents can view the design plans and talk with the project team.

  • 2027 - Construction is planned to begin.

Roundabouts reduce the risk of serious collisions, improve traffic efficiency, and provide safer crossings for pedestrians. Once complete, this roundabout will support current traffic volumes and future growth in north Brandon.

Construction is planned to begin in 2027.

  • Construction will occur in multiple stages

  • Traffic will be maintained at all times using a Traffic Management Plan

  • Drivers can expect lane reductions, temporary shifts, and short-term detours

  • Access to nearby homes and businesses will remain available

  • Emergency access will be maintained throughout construction

A Traffic Management Plan (TMP) shows how traffic will be moved safely through the work zone at each stage of construction. This TMP is designed to meet Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s requirements for work on a provincial highway. Traffic patterns will change as work progresses. Temporary signs, lane markings, traffic barriers, and flag persons will be used to direct drivers safely through the area. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, follow posted signs, and allow extra travel time.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027, and the project is currently expected to be complete by early 2028.

Weather can affect road construction, so timelines may change. Any changes to the schedule or traffic patterns will be shared on this page and on the City’s social media channels.

There are no full closures planned. The intersection will stay open throughout construction, with traffic maintained at all times. However, expect partial restrictions that change by stage, including lane reductions, temporary lane shifts, and short-term detours. At times, some turning movements on Braecrest Drive may be limited to right-turn-in and right-turn-out only. When this happens, drivers on 18th Street North who need to turn west onto Braecrest Drive will be directed to continue to Cumberland Avenue to turn around. Signed detours will be in place.

Drivers should expect delays and short-term detours depending on the stage of construction, which may affect bus travel times

Yes. Emergency access will be maintained at all times throughout construction.

Yes. Work is planned to replace sewer and water utilities. Short interruptions may be experienced by those immediately within the limits of construction. If longer interruptions are expected temporary water services will be provided. These interruptions will be communicated well in advance.

This page will be updated as the project progresses. To get email updates, subscribe to news updates at brandon.ca/subscribe and select “Active Projects.” You can also follow the City of Brandon on Facebook and Instagram for timely updates about traffic changes.

Access to nearby homes and businesses will be maintained throughout construction. Temporary signs will be used to guide customers and deliveries. Some turning movements may be temporarily restricted at times (for example, right-turn-in and right-turn-out only on parts of Braecrest Drive), with signed alternatives in place.
