1st Street & Victoria Avenue Watermain

1st Street Watermain Replacement: Louise Avenue to Van Horne Avenue

The City of Brandon is replacing the watermain along 1st Street between Louise Avenue and Van Horne Avenue.

This project involves upgrading aging underground infrastructure, including installation of new watermain piping, valves, hydrants, and service connections. The improvements will help ensure reliable drinking water service and support continued growth in the community.

Construction will be completed in stages within the roadway. While traffic will be maintained, lane reductions, temporary closures, and access adjustments will be required throughout the project.

Why?

Factors that influence the decision to replace this watermain include the:

  • Number of recorded watermain breaks.
  • Remaining service life of the existing watermain.
  • Existing watermain material type and diameter.
  • Customers the watermain services such as hospitals, assisted living facilities, educational institutions, industrial, commercial or residential.
  • Roadway classification and any major crossings such as, provincial highways, arterials, collectors, locals, rail crossings, river crossings.

The 1st Street replacement project specifically targets a section of the water distribution system that:

  • Has a high number of recorded breaks.
  • Was installed in 1910.
  • Requires a larger diameter to increase pressure and flow in the area.
  • Serves a hospital, multiple assisted living facilities and a commercial area of the City.
  • Is installed within an arterial street and within a CN Railway crossing.

As a result, this project has been identified as a priority for renewal under the City’s asset management strategy due to its probability of failure, the significant consequences that a failure would create for critical customers and transportation corridors, and the need to maintain the City’s required levels of service.

What to Expect During Construction

  • Lane reductions and partial road closures are required.
  • Traffic delays are expected.
  • Access to properties will be maintained where possible.
  • Construction activity will be visible in the area.
  • Temporary water system supply.
