Emergency Services Volunteer Opportunities

The City of Brandon is currently seeking qualified and interested citizens to volunteer for position(s) at Brandon Emergency Social Services Reception Centres. Opportunities are on an as need basis as emergency situations arise. Actual dates and times are not available until emergency situation(s) occur.

 

Responsibilities

  • Greet distressed or evacuated individuals in a courteous and inviting manner
  • Coordinate health-related transportation needs
  • Provide and distribute information to individuals on public health inquiries
  • Provide supplies and per diems to evacuees as required
  • Provide information to individuals on the number of services that the City of Brandon offers
  • Log and submit reports as needed
  • Record and forward any inquiries that need follow-up, clarification, or more information not readily available to you
  • Any other duties necessary to assist individuals in need of assistance

 

Experience and Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Effective methods of relaying information on a number of programs and services
  • The ability to speak another language is desirable but not required
  • Knowledge of the community and its services
  • Planning, organizing, and project coordination skills
  • Independent and able to work with limited supervision
  • Able to follow safety precautions when on site
  • Able to follow direction and policies at all times

 

Volunteer Requirements

  • Must have own method of transportation
  • Must be able to perform duties for three or more hours at a time
  • Must be social, have a friendly attitude, and enjoy meeting new people
  • Must be compassionate and be able to deal with the sensitive issue
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to work weekends and/or evenings
  • Report to all scheduled shifts/events and meetings in a punctual and professional manner
  • Notify the Coordinator in advance if unable to attend the event

 

Supervision

  • All volunteers will be responsible to the Emergency Preparedness Program and the City of Brandon Community Services Department
  • Some supervision may be provided by senior volunteers with two (2) years' experience or City of Brandon employees
  • Volunteers may be asked to cooperate in an annual review and assessment of the Volunteer Development Program and their overall experience volunteering with the City of Brandon

Opportunities are on an as need basis as emergency situation(s) arise. Actual dates and times are not available until emergency situation(s) occur.

 

Responsibilities

  • Greet distressed or evacuated individuals in a courteous and inviting manner
  • Distribute bottled water to individuals in need during a water shortage
  • Cataloguing of individuals who received bottled water and the quantity
  • Log and submit reports as needed
  • Record and forward any inquiries that need follow-up, clarification or more information not readily available to you
  • Any other duties necessary to assisting individuals in need of assistance

 

Experience and Skills
