Homeowners Affordability Tax Credit
The Manitoba Government has replaced the School Tax Rebate and Education Property Tax Credit with the Homeowners Affordability Tax Credit. In 2026, residential property owners who qualify can receive a rebate of up to $1,600 on their school taxes.
To qualify, the property must be your primary residence as of January 1, have a single dwelling unit, and be your only property receiving the credit in Manitoba. For the credit to be applied directly to your property tax notice, you must apply to the City of Brandon in person or by completing the online Account Change Form. Applications for 2026 must be received by April 15, 2026.
Farm property owners will automatically receive a 50% rebate on their 2026 school taxes. This rebate is applied directly to their property tax notice and owners do not need to pre-qualify.
| Example of Homeowners Affordability Tax Rebate Calculation on Residential Property | |
|---|---|
| School Division Taxes | $2,000 |
| Minus: Homeowners Affordability Tax Credit (HATC) | -$1,600 |
| Net School Taxes | $400 |
If HATC is not received on the current year's property tax bill, the tax credit may be claimed on your personal income tax return.
