In the City of Brandon, Snow Route parking restrictions come into effect November 15th to March 31st annually. The signage used to designate a Snow Route and the hours of parking restrictions, is illustrated on this page. After a significant amount of snow (in excess of 5 centimeters) and/or winds that cause drifting on snow routes, a parking restriction may be declared by the City’s Public Works Department.
The City of Brandon Traffic By-law No. 5463/16/87 allows for the establishment of parking restrictions upon Snow Routes. It is an offence for any person to park or allow to remain parked any vehicle on any portion of a Snow Route where a parking restriction applies.
In an effort to help minimize the effects of the parking restrictions on area residents and business owners, the following has been adopted by the City:
“Vehicles will be allowed to park on a snow route, without penalty, provided there has been no snowfall that would initiate plowing and/or snow removal, and provided that any vehicle that is so parked is otherwise in compliance with all other provisions of the Traffic By-law No. 5463/16/87, as well as all other applicable laws, without exception."
There shall be no minimum period of advance notice expected by the public from the City of Brandon. In the event there is an accumulation of snow to such an extent that the Public Works Department initiates a Snow Plowing/Removal Program, notification will be made by 4:00 p.m. that day. Snow Route parking restrictions shall come into effect at 11:00 p.m. (24:00) of the same day and bylaw enforcement shall take place.
Enforcement will include ticketing parked vehicles and/or may also include vehicles being towed at the vehicle owner’s expense. The parking restriction will be in effect between the hours indicated on the Snow Route signs, but may be extended to the next evening by additional notification from the Public Works Department if additional time is required to clear the designated snow routes. In such circumstances, a person who parked or allowed to remain parked any vehicle upon a Snow Route shall immediately move the vehicle or be subject to prosecution in accordance with the Traffic By-law No. 5463/16/87.
A person who parks or allows to remain parked any vehicle upon a Snow Route pursuant to the above mentioned parking restrictions shall do so at their own risk, as Snow Route parking restrictions may become immediately enforced where the City of Brandon plans to initiate snow plowing and/or snow removal. The above noted parking restrictions shall be without prejudice to and not interfere with, impair or effect enforcement of the Traffic By-law No. 5463/16/87, nor shall such parking restrictions be taken or be held to be a defence to compliance with the Traffic By-law No. 5463/16/87.
