The Order of The Buffalo Hunt Award

Yesterday, July 24th, 2025, at City Hall, Premier Wab Kinew joined Mayor Jeff Fawcett, Chief Tyler Bates, and École secondaire Neelin High School Principal Baseswa Nundu to recognize Constable Moshe Linov and first responders with The Order of the Buffalo Hunt—one of Manitoba’s highest honours—for their courageous actions during the June attack at Neelin High School.
Among those in attendance were fellow Brandon Police Service (BPS) officers, BPS leadership and staff, members of the Brandon Police Board, Brandon School Division (BSD) Superintendent Mathew Gustafson, BSD trustees and staff, and most notably, Chinonso Onuke, 15, a Grade 10 student who was seriously injured in the attack. Chinonso attended with his family by his side, demonstrating remarkable strength and resilience.
In his remarks, Chief Bates addressed Chinonso directly:
“Chinonso, you have shown remarkable resilience in the face of an unimaginable experience, and we are truly honoured by your presence. To your family, thank you for being here with us—your strength, love, and support embody the very spirit of unity and healing.”
He went on to say:
“Today, we gather not just to recognize bravery—but to recognize what it means to serve, to protect, and to love a community enough to stand between it and harm. On June 10th, fear entered a place that should be sacred—our schools. But just as quickly, so did courage…”
We are forever grateful to our beloved School Resource Officer, Constable Linov, and to all the courageous and well-trained first responders—as well as the dedicated staff and teachers at École secondaire Neelin High School—who all acted swiftly and with care, securing the school and preventing further harm that day.
Together, we stand united against hate and for a safer future.
