Police Rescue Two from Assiniboine River
SPECIAL NEWS RELEASE
Police Rescue Two from Assiniboine River
Every day, officers of the Brandon Police Service show up with a deep sense of duty, heart, and courage—and on Friday night, June 27th, 2025, that commitment was on full display in a powerful and heroic way.
At approximately 6:48 p.m., Brandon Police Service received a report of an intoxicated 27-year-old female who had expressed suicidal thoughts and had jumped from a moving vehicle near Dinsdale Park.
By 6:54 p.m., the individual had made her way to the riverbank just west of the CP train monument and entered the Assiniboine River. The two officers who responded to the call did not hesitate to enter the river upon arrival, swimming out to reach the woman about one-third of the way across. They were able to safely bring her back to shore.
An intoxicated male, later identified as the woman’s brother-in-law, had also entered the river in an attempt to assist but was unable to swim. He was also safely brought back to shore by the officers.
The female was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre for medical assessment. Following her release from hospital, she was held in police custody to ensure her safety and to receive a mental health assessment the following morning.
The Brandon Police Service is proud of the swift, selfless, and courageous actions taken by our officers. Their willingness to risk their own safety speaks volumes about the heart of our members and their dedication to this community.
