Flood Update - July 12

The City of Brandon's flood response continues to focus on being proactive and staying ahead of changing conditions as we near river peak. Crews continue to actively monitor river levels, dikes, and flood protection measures throughout the community.

Current flood forecasts indicate the once the river reaches its peak, water levels will remain elevated for several days before beginning a slow decline.

Provincial crews continue to monitor and maintain flood mitigation measures along 1st Street.

We have received some great questions from residents within the designated evacuation zones, which is encouraging to see. It tells us that individuals and families are staying informed, paying attention to updates, and taking appropriate steps to be prepared. The City is sharing information proactively to ensure residents have the time and information they need should conditions change. Being prepared does not mean there is an immediate concern; it means we are taking a cautious and responsible approach as we work through this flood event.

Safety Reminder

While much of the focus is on the anticipated peak, residents should remember that flood-related hazards often continue after water levels begin to recede.

As floodwaters withdraw, riverbanks can become unstable due to erosion, saturated ground can give way unexpectedly, and damage to flood protection measures may not always be immediately visible. Areas that appear safe may still present significant risks, even when water levels are dropping.

Fast-moving water remains dangerous, debris can emerge, and erosion can weaken shorelines, dikes, and nearby infrastructure. In many cases, the period immediately following a flood peak can present significant safety concerns as crews assess conditions and identify areas that may have been impacted by high water.

The City's flood response remains active, and crews will continue monitoring conditions.

The City of Brandon will continue providing updates as conditions evolve. Please continue to stay informed, prepared, and safe!
