Construction of the Membrane Building at the Water Treatment Facility Begins Next Week
Brandon, MB – The second phase of a multi-year upgrade and expansion of the City of Brandon’s municipal water treatment facility is poised to begin in October. This follows the successful completion of phase one of the upgrade: the Chemical Building construction in 2022. Contractors will be mobilizing to the site next week for the construction of a dedicated membrane building connected to the existing water treatment facility at 108 - 26th St. N.
Joint funding between the City, Provincial and Federal governments through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) contributed to the award of this $127.9 million project to North American Constructors Ltd. this summer.
Construction will be focused in the southwest corner of the existing property along McDonald Ave. over the next 4 years and will include:
- A new membrane building complete with a dual-membrane process, using both ultra- and nano-filtration, to treat water
- A new electrical substation
- Additional treated water storage
- Underground piping
- Many connections to existing equipment both inside and outside the facility
The project is anticipated to be complete by June of 2029.
Every effort will be made to limit the impact on residents during construction, with conditions expected to change over the duration of the project. Access to the south parking lot within Queen Elizabeth Park will be closed beginning Mon, Oct. 5th. The tennis courts within the park will continue to be accessible for use on the north side of the courts.
