City Council Meeting Highlights - May 20, 2025
Brandon City Council held its regular meeting on Tue, May 20, 2025. The key discussions and decisions included the following:
Council received a presentation from Bee City Brandon about community efforts, including the revitalization of Eleanor Kidd Park. This project aims to make the park climate change resilient with native plant species found in Westman. Scheduled events are on May 28 (5-7 p.m.), May 29 (5-7 p.m.), and May 31 (4-6 p.m.).
Council received a presentation on the upcoming Arbor Day Celebration taking place at the Keystone Centre, Clara Tent on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This free event features live music, seedling planting, information booths, climbing demonstrations, face painting, and complimentary hot dogs while supplies last.
Council approved a $75,000 project to develop a capital investment planning framework to assess departmental investments based on need. Initially part of the 2026 budget, the project can be advanced this year.
Unit T-40B, a Class 8 tandem axle truck for the Sewer & Water Department's trailer-hauling needs, was approved for purchase.
Updates to the Fee Schedule Regulation were approved for Building Safety and Development Charges.
Council approved $200,000 from the Municipal Building Maintenance Reserve for Phase 3 of the Civic Services Complex remediation project for a fire pump room. It is anticipated that that the repair work for the Civic Services Complex is nearing and the building will be ready for occupancy this fall.
Council approved two accommodation grants:
- $30,000 to the Manitoba Lacrosse Association for the 2025 Prairie Cup, a U13, U15, and U17 tournament with teams from MB, SK, and AB. This is Brandon's first time hosting the event.
- $78,000 to Brandon Fire & Emergency Services for the 2025, 2027, and 2029 Emergency Services Convention in Brandon, allocated at $26,000 per year.
City Council approved four resolutions to be considered by the Association of Manitoba Municipalities at the June District meetings and the 2025 Annual Convention in November:
1. Abandoned and Derelict Properties
2. Private Daycare Facilities
3. Group Home Facilities
4. Private Substance Use Facilities
Council approved two procurement bids for significant projects:
- ABCO Supply & Service's bid for the SW lift station and forcemain upgrades to provide wastewater services to the city's southwest area.
- Alternative Excavation's bid to carry out the 1st Street watermain replacement from Richmond Ave. to Brandon Ave., replacing a watermain that has been in place since 1931.
By-Laws:
- By-Law No. 7427 was read for the first time to rezone property at 1900 – 34th Street to allow for the development of a new public school site and ten detached dwelling lots along a new public road.
- By-Law No. 7428 was read for a first time to rezone part of 911 Douglas Street from PR Parks and Recreation to IG Industrial General to enable future industrial development by others.
