City Council Meeting Highlights

June 23, 2025

Brandon, MB - Brandon City Council held their regular meeting on Mon, June 23, 2025. In addition to committee reports and enquiries, the following key discussions and decisions were made:

Presentations & Delegations:

  • Brandon First presented a recap of 2024 events and outlined several initiatives taking place this year.
  • Mike Theriault addressed Council with a delegation on council procedure and governance reform.

 

General Business:

  • A multi-year bid for nine SUVs for Brandon Police Service pursuit vehicles was approved for the total bid price of $703,543. Five units will be delivered in 2025 and four in 2026.

  • Council approved the bid for the supply and delivery of a combination sewer and catch basin cleaner for $898,798, which is expected to be delivered in 2026 due to a 430-day delivery timeframe.

  • The tender for 26th Street Reconstruction Project from Park Ave to Victoria Ave was approved at a cost of $3.5 million. The reconstruction project is set to start in July and will include:
    • Replacement of underground utilities
    • Reconstruction of the entire street including the curbs and gutters
    • Reconstruction of sidewalks
    • Enhancement of the pedestrian crossing at J.R. Reid School
    • Replacement of traffic signals at 26th St. & Park Ave.
    • Modifications to intersections at Balsam Cres. & 26th St. and McTavish Ave. & 26th St.

  • City Council authorized administration to proceed with the construction of a Clubhouse for the Maple Leaf Foods Sports Complex at a total cost of $3.8 million, which surpassed the amount in the 2025 Financial plan. To accommodate this variance, Council approved monies transferred from the Parks Reserve and the Capital Development Reserve.


By-Laws:

  • Council approved By-Law No. 7425 to rezone 305 and 307 -14th St to allow for the development of a three-storey nine-unit residential building.

  • By-Law No. 7432 to close and convey a portion of Frederick St., McTavish Ave., and the public lane south of Victoria Ave. E. was read a first time. If approved, the proposed road closures would be consolidated into one parcel to assist with the development of a new childcare centre.

  • Council approved By-Law No. 7418 to amend By-Law No. 7331 to borrow funds for the Southeast Brandon Drainage Improvements Project. Approval to proceed with borrowing funds has been received through the Municipal Board of Manitoba.
