April 22, 2024 - Federal Housing Program

The Federal housing program was announced recently ahead of the federal budget. In addition to a variety of programs including ongoing housing accelerator fund, for which the City is moving forward with our actions, the federal government is proposing a new $6 billion Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund to accelerate the constructing and upgrading of critical housing infrastructure. The funding is for water, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste infrastructure to support the construction of new housing. $1 billion is earmarked directly for municipalities to support urgent infrastructure needs to support housing and $5 billion is earmarked for provinces and territories to support long term priorities, subject to conditions.
 
The conditions of approval on the provinces and territories include inclusive zoning considerations which we are currently exploring under best practices through the housing accelerator fund. Provinces will have until January 1, 2025 to secure an agreement. If an agreement is not reached, their funding allocation will be transferred to the municipal stream.
