Green Streets Tree Reimbursement
The purpose of the Green Streets Tree Reimbursement Initiative is to encourage homeowners within the municipality to plant trees on private property contributing to urban greening, environmental sustainability, improved air quality, and enhanced community well-being.
Program Objectives:
- Environmental Impact: Increase the urban tree canopy on private properties, reducing the carbon footprint and improving air quality.
- Community Engagement: Involve residents in the beautification of neighborhoods, while raising environmental awareness.
- Energy Savings: Trees planted on private property provide shade, which can lower energy bills by reducing the need for air conditioning in summer.
- Biodiversity: Promote the planting of native species to support local wildlife and increase biodiversity.
Eligibility Requirements
- Property Location: The program is open to homeowners and property owners within the municipal boundaries.
- Property Type: Only private residential properties are eligible for this program, including single-family homes, duplexes, and small multi-family units. Trees must be planted on the property owned by the applicant and not on any public or municipal land (e.g., sidewalks, streets, parks).
- Tree Selection: Participants must select tree species from an approved list of native or climate-appropriate species, which will be provided by the municipal parks department or environmental agency.
- Application Process: Homeowners must submit an application detailing the proposed location for planting, selected tree species.
Program Details
1. Reimbursement Amount:
- Homeowners may be reimbursed up to $300 for the cost of purchasing a tree on their private property.
- Multiple Trees can be installed.
- Total reimbursement is up to $300.
2. Approved Costs:
- Purchase of tree sapling (must be on the approved species list).
3. Planting Guidelines:
- Trees must be planted exclusively on private property and cannot be planted on public land such as streets, sidewalks, or park spaces.
- The location for planting must comply with municipal guidelines to avoid utility lines, sidewalks, and infrastructure.
- Trees must be spaced and planted following best practices to ensure healthy growth and minimize conflicts with surrounding structures.
4. Maintenance Requirements:
- Homeowners must maintain the tree for at least two years after planting, ensuring proper watering, mulching, and care.
Application Process
1. Pre-Approval
Homeowners submit an application form with details about their property, the proposed tree species, and the planting location on private property. The tree must be planted in an area designated on the property that complies with all municipal regulations.
2. Purchase and Planting
Once pre-approved, homeowners can purchase and plant their tree or trees on their private property according to the guidelines.
Receipts for all trees must be kept for reimbursement submission.
3. Reimbursement Submission
After planting, the homeowner submits a reimbursement request with proof of purchase, and a photo showing the tree planted on private property.
A municipal representative may verify the planting, either through photos submitted by the homeowner or through a site visit.
4. Reimbursement
Upon approval, the reimbursement is processed and issued within 4 to 6 weeks.
