Brandon Police Service Responds to Incident at Earl Oxford School
The Brandon Police Service is aware of social media commentary relating to a recent incident at Earl Oxford School and wishes to provide factual context regarding police involvement.
On May 19th at 12:53 p.m. police were called to Earl Oxford School after reports of an escalating and violent situation involving an 11-year-old student. Upon arrival, officers could hear the 11-year-old male youth screaming and striking the walls and door of a room. School staff advised that the student had caused significant damage inside the school, including overturning furniture, throwing books and other items, and had punched the principal in the face multiple times. A staff member witnessed the assault.
Officers worked with school staff to try to de-escalate the situation while awaiting the arrival of the child’s parent.
Upon parental arrival, officers permitted the mother to speak with her son in hopes the situation would de-escalate; however, the youth continued acting aggressively. During this time, the student continued to damage property, including punching through drywall into an adjacent office and then gaining entry to that office through the hole.
Due to ongoing safety concerns, the youth was taken into custody and escorted from the school. During the escort, the youth resisted and kicked an officer multiple times. The mother also interfered with police efforts despite repeated directions to remain back and was briefly taken into custody before later being released without charges.
Once the youth calmed down, officers removed the handcuffs, provided support and water, and arranged for him to speak with mental health professionals at CATC before he was turned over to his father and CATC staff.
Brandon Police Service continues to work with the Brandon School Division and the family in the interest of safety and support for the child, staff, and school community.
