Open Streets Brandon Pilot Project to Transform Lorne Avenue into a People-Friendly Community Space

Brandon, MB –This summer, residents will have the opportunity to experience Brandon's streets in a new way as the Open Streets Brandon Working Group launches a pilot project that transforms Lorne Avenue into a vibrant public space.

On July 19, Aug. 16, and Sept. 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Lorne Avenue between 15th Street and Franklin Street will be temporarily closed to vehicle traffic, creating a safe, accessible corridor connecting Stanley Park and Rideau Park.

Open Streets is an internationally recognized initiative that temporarily opens streets to people instead of vehicles, encouraging walking, cycling, rolling, recreation, and community connection. The Open Streets Brandon Pilot Project will create a safe, accessible route between two of Brandon's most popular parks, inviting people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the added public space and participate in various activities.

The 1.8-kilometre route is designed to be family-friendly and accessible, taking approximately eight minutes to cycle or 30 minutes to walk. Along the route, participants can enjoy community booths, live music, activities, and gathering spaces located in both Stanley Park and Rideau Park.

The events will be supported by volunteers and City staff, who will manage access points, install signage, and help ensure participant safety throughout the day. Flaggers will be stationed at major intersections, including 1st Street and 10th Street, to facilitate safe crossings while maintaining emergency vehicle access.

Open Streets Brandon is a collaborative community initiative led by the Open Streets Brandon Working Group, which includes Downtown Brandon BIZ, Bike Brandon, Prairie Mountain Health, Sustainable Brandon, the City of Brandon and members of Brandon's accessibility community.
