Join Us for the Grand Opening of Brandon's New Diversion Depot on August 29 at the Eastview Landfill

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon is pleased to announce that the new Diversion Depot located at the Eastview Landfill, 765 – 33rd St. E., will host its grand opening on Sat, Aug. 29, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Residents are invited to tour the facility, speak with staff, learn about diversion opportunities, and enter to win prizes. Staff will be on site throughout the day to answer questions and help residents navigate the new depot.

The Diversion Depot has been made possible thanks to funding from the Manitoba government. Earlier this year, the Province of Manitoba announced $400,000 in funding to assist with the establishment of a consolidated waste and recycling site at the Eastview Landfill. The project is designed to streamline services, improve recycling efforts, and better manage the growing number of recyclable materials generated in Brandon.

"We are very pleased to support the city of Brandon’s efforts to divert waste from the landfill," said Minister Glen Simard, Minister of Municipal and Northern Relations. "Our government has enjoyed a strong working relationship with the mayor and council as investments like this have a direct impact on the environment and municipal taxes."

"The new Diversion Depot creates a dedicated site where recyclables, organics, electronics, tires, scrap metal and many other materials can be dropped off free of charge," said Mayor Jeff Fawcett. "We're keeping the city cleaner while reducing contamination and keeping materials out of the landfill. We thank the Province of Manitoba for its support in establishing this for our community."

The new Diversion Depot represents a major change in how residents access recycling and diversion services. Instead of proceeding directly to the landfill scale, residents will now enter the Diversion Depot first, where staff will help direct materials to the appropriate diversion streams. Only waste that cannot be recycled, reused, composted, or otherwise diverted will proceed across the landfill scale for disposal.

The Diversion Depot accepts a wide range of residential materials at no charge during operating hours, including:

• Mixed recycling
• Organics, including yard and food waste
• Scrap metal
• Clean wood (unpainted / untreated) and tree waste
• Tires
• Electronic waste
• Propane tanks
• Used oil, filters, and antifreeze
• Household and vehicle batteries
• Clean fill (dirt)
• Concrete, brick, and asphalt
• Mattresses and boxsprings

Residential disposal fees continue to apply only for garbage and non-divertible materials. The disposal fee for general refuse up to 200 kilograms is $8. Freon-containing appliances remain subject to a $31 processing fee.

As part of the transition, the recycling depot that was previously available outside the landfill gates has been relocated inside the Diversion Depot. The recycling depot will no longer be available 24 hours a day and can only be accessed when the Eastview Landfill is open.
