City Launches Multi-Family FoodCycler Pilot Program
Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon is inviting residents living in larger multi-family buildings to take part in a new pilot program aimed at reducing food waste and exploring innovative waste diversion solutions.
The Multi-Family FoodCycler Pilot Program will provide up to 100 eligible residents with the opportunity to purchase a FoodCycler Eco 3 unit at a subsidized cost of $100 and participate in a 12-week pilot project. The program is open to Brandon residents who live in a multi-family dwelling with seven or more units. Residents interested in participating can register at bit.ly/FoodCycler_Brandon.
FoodCyclers are compact, countertop appliances that transform food scraps into a dry, nutrient-rich soil amendment in as little as four to nine hours. The units can process a variety of food waste, helping residents divert organic material from the landfill without the need for outdoor composting.
“Reducing household food waste is an important part of building a more sustainable community," said Lindsay Hargreaves, Environment Initiatives Coordinator. “This pilot program will give residents who are not eligible to participate in the City's Green Cart Program an opportunity to try an innovative waste diversion solution while helping the City assess whether a larger-scale program could benefit Brandon in the future.”
Over the 12-week pilot period, participants will be asked to:
· Use their FoodCycler regularly
· Track and report household food waste diversion metrics
· Complete surveys and provide feedback on their experience
The information collected will help the City evaluate the effectiveness of the program, understand participant experiences, and determine whether a broader rollout should be considered in the future.
The pilot supports the City of Brandon's Climate Change Action Plan and ongoing efforts to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill and identify practical solutions that residents can use at home.
