City Council Meeting Highlights - July 27, 2026

Council directed administration to begin fogging for nuisance mosquitoes immediately. Weather dependent, fogging will proceed overnight on Wed, July 29, 2026, beginning after 9:30 p.m. For updates, please follow the City of Brandon social media channels.
Update on 2026 Flood Recovery Efforts
Council received an update on the 2026 flood recovery efforts and authorized up to $2.28 million for flood mitigation work completed to date and upcoming flood recovery projects. The funding will come from reserves, pending any Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) or insurance recoveries.
Advanced Funding for Household Collection Cart Inventory Replenishment
Council approved $75,000 from the Disposal Site Reserve to purchase additional household collection carts. The advance funding will replenish depleted inventory and help ensure the continued delivery of curbside collection services while the 2027 capital allocation is pending.
Landfill Gas Collection System Repair
Council approved a contract for repairs to the Landfill Gas Collection System at a cost of $196,759.56 (net of PST). The system is an essential component of the landfill’s environmental protection infrastructure. It helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, odor, and the risk of uncontrolled gas migration.
Committee Reports:
- Council received a report from the Personnel Committee and approved a Total Employee Rewards Strategy, including a one-time four per cent market adjustment for non-union employees, wellbeing initiatives to support recruitment and retention, and funding for a benefits stabilization strategy.
- Council approved a report from the Committee of the Whole on real estate matters, including several Housing Accelerator Fund initiatives: funding for housing-supportive infrastructure, grants to support new market housing projects, incentives and funding to support future housing development, and funding for the purchase of a building to support community services.
By-Laws:
- Council approved By-Law No. 7457, along with a subdivision application, to rezone property located at 1910 Bell Avenue from DR Development Reserve to RMD Residential Moderate Density. This will enable the residential development of two four-storey buildings totaling 131 dwelling units. The approval is subject to several conditions, including a development agreement.
- Council approved By-Law No. 7462 authorizing the opening of a portion of public road across, located at the NE corner of the intersection of 26th St and Maryland Ave. This road opening will accommodate the design and construction of a new roundabout intersection at 26th St. & Marland Ave.
The next regular City Council meeting will be held on Mon, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m.
