2016 Green Cart Program Set to Begin April 12th

April 1, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon’s Sanitation Department is pleased to inform the public that the onset of spring has brought about the early start-up of this year’s City of Brandon Green Cart Program! The residential household and yard organics collection program will officially kick off on Tuesday, April 12th. Due to user demand, the program will be returning to a weekly pick-up schedule this year, versus the bi-weekly pick-up schedule of previous years. This year, weekly pick-up will be maintained through to early November, weather-dependant.

All collection days will coincide with a household’s regular refuse and recycling pick-up day. Program participants are reminded to have their Green Cart out for pick-up no later than 6 a.m. on their scheduled pick-up day and to only use compostable plastic bags or kraft paper bags as bin liners. Participants are also encouraged to rinse their Green Cart out regularly to avoid compost residues or odors. A refresher on composting and what organic materials are and are not accepted by the City of Brandon’s Green Cart Program can be found here.

The City of Brandon Sanitation Department continues to accept participant registrations for the 2016 Green Cart Program. If you have any questions regarding the Green Cart Program, please send an email to greencart@brandon.ca or call the City of Brandon’s Sanitation Department directly at 204-729-2281.

Last year, the popular program succeeded in keeping nearly 1,800 tonnes of organic material out of the landfill stream and, instead, turned it into a high-quality compost product.

As always, the public can also access any one of the City’s compost drop-off depots listed here or can take their Green Cart directly to the Eastview Landfill. Summer hours at the Eastview Landfill are now in effect and can be found at http://www.brandon.ca/sanitation/landfill.
