Doors Open Brandon Is Celebrating 20 Years

June 15, 2022

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon, Brandon’s Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee, and their many community partners will throw the doors open to some of the community’s most unique character buildings and significant community sites during the 20th annual Doors Open Brandon weekend July 15 – 17, 2022.

The 20th Annual Doors Open Brandon weekend starts with a Guided Bus Tour in conjunction with Brandon in Bloom on Friday, July 15, followed by specialty tours and self-guided tours on Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17.

Self-guided tours include a mix of 14 privately owned properties, publicly owned properties, and museums. Many of these properties have been able to keep their traditional charm while having been renovated and revitalized for the benefit of the community.

Specialty tours include a nature walk at the Assiniboine Food Forest, ‘Learning About the Other Side of History’ downtown, the ‘Brandon Mental Health Centre’ tour, and a special Indigenous Event ‘Land, Peoples & Culture’.

The Guided Bus Tour is an exclusive tour that explores Brandon’s secret gardens and hidden heritage treasures after hours. As space is limited, tickets must be purchased in advance. More information on the Guided Bus Tour, including cost and location of tickets, will be available on heritagebrandon.ca/doors-open by Tuesday, June 21, 2022.

Other activities throughout Doors Open Brandon include

  • Tag to Win Challenge

  • Art showcase prepared and hosted by Mini U students at Brandon University

  • Story time at the Brandon Public Library

  • Live music and refreshments at the Daly House Museum

City of Brandon Heritage Marketing Coordinator Caitlyn Post notes that this year’s event, the first in-person since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, offers a great mix of activities that should pique the curiosity of young and old alike.

“For this special 20th anniversary, Doors Open Brandon will have round the clock events. We aim to offer something for everyone, ranging from a historic bus tour to self-guided tours to specialty guided walking tours across the city,” notes Post. “Not only are there returning locations, but there are also new highlights this year like the ‘Land, Peoples & Culture’ event Saturday afternoon. Overall, this is a wonderful opportunity to get out in the community and learn about Brandon’s rich heritage.”
