Brandon Celebrates National Waste Reduction Week

October 18, 2021

Brandon, MB -- The City of Brandon is celebrating National Waste Reduction Week, recognized this year from October 18th - 24th. This year’s theme for the National Waste Reduction Week in Canada is “Too Good To Waste”. Canadians are encouraged to think of items that we would otherwise discard as resources that we conserve, reuse, or recycle to protect our environment.

Did you know that more than half of your household waste can be recycled? For example, milk cartons, glass, food and beverage containers, plastic bottles, juice boxes, margarine containers, aluminum cans, cardboard, newspapers, cereal boxes, steel food containers and more can be recycled. For more information on what other materials (tires, oils, electronics, batteries) you can recycle, please visit brandon.ca/recycling/recyclepedia

4R Waste Ambassadors help educate community members about the City's waste diversion programs. Volunteers receive training and resources to become a certified 4R Waste Ambassador.

One of the 4R Waste Ambassador Program volunteers, Kelsey Clevett, had this to say about the program: “I joined the program to learn more about Brandon’s waste diversion programs. I wanted to know what I could be doing to reduce the waste that I send to the landfill. As part of the 4R training I took a tour of the landfill which was amazing. I was able to ask questions and see how everything gets processed once it leaves my home. Waste reduction isn’t just putting stuff in your bins and calling it a day. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that I didn’t know about. The 4R program has opened my eyes and I encourage people to join the program if they are interested in gaining knowledge about simple, small things they can be doing to reduce waste.”

4R Waste Ambassadors will be at the Brandon Shoppers Mall on Friday, October 22nd from 12p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 23rd from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. These ambassadors will be promoting the 4R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink. Bring your used household batteries and be entered for eco-friendly door prizes. To learn more about 4R Waste Ambassadors, visit brandonenvironment.ca/waste-diversion/4r-waste-ambassador-program.
