June 12, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon’s Finance Department would like to advise the public that 2020 tax bills are now being mailed out to Brandon property owners. In recognition of the financial hardships that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic response in Manitoba may be placing on property owners, the 2020 property tax payment deadline has been extended by one month to Friday, July 31st, 2020. In addition, the City of Brandon is offering a number of flexible Tax Installment Plan (TIP) options for payment of 2020 property taxes by the end of the year. Enrolment in the City of Brandon’s convenient Tax Installment Plan (TIP) has been extended to July 15th, 2020 and can be completed on the City of Brandon website at http://onlineservices.brandon.ca/updateinfo.aspx.

When you receive your tax bill, please take a few moments to read the accompanying leaflet for more information on these flexible payment options. If you own any property in the City of Brandon and do not receive a tax bill by Tuesday, June 30th, 2020, please contact the Finance Department by phoning 204-729-2228 or 204-729-2592, or by sending an email to taxes@brandon.ca. Please note that property owners are responsible to ensure taxes are paid, whether or not a bill is received.

If you are mailing your property tax payment, please allow sufficient business days to meet the Friday, July 31st deadline.  Also, those paying by Internet or tele-banking should take note of how many days their financial institution indicates it will take before the payee receives the funds. The City must receive the funds by the end of business day (5 p.m.) on Friday, July 31st.

Property owners whose financial circumstances haven’t changed amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and who are able to pay property taxes in full before or by the payment deadline are encouraged to do so in order to keep the City Of Brandon’s cash flow intact so that essential municipal services continue.

Property owners who wish to attend Brandon City Hall (410-9th Street) to make their property tax payment are asked to respect all COVID-19 safety protocols that have been put in place at the facility, including:

•             Entering the building via the Louise Avenue (north-facing) door and exiting via the 9th Street (southwest-facing) door;

•             Respecting the mandatory handwashing/sanitizing procedure in place prior to proceeding to the service counter;

•             Respecting the established system of arrows, safe physical distancing markers and stanchions installed in the foyer of City Hall, which currently has a maximum capacity of 33 persons at any one time.

If you do not wish to attend to Brandon City Hall to make your property tax payment, a detailed list of the various property tax payment options can be found at https://www.brandon.ca/payment-options.

Property owners should take note that penalties on unpaid 2020 taxes will accrue at a rate of 1.25% per month, beginning October 1st, 2020.
