Celebrate ‘Eco Day in May’ at Brandon’s Downtown Global Market

May 19, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon’s Environment Section, in partnership with the Brandon Environment Committee and Brandon’s Downtown Global Market, invite all members of the public to Brandon’s 3rd annual Eco Day in May event on Saturday, May 27th, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Downtown Global Market, located at the corner of 12th Street and Rosser Avenue.

The family-friendly community education event was established in 2015 as a way to promote sustainability and usher in the outdoor season in downtown Brandon through an offering of entertainment, demonstrations, giveaways, and door prizes. This year’s event is being promoted by Take Pride Winnipeg! as part of its “Take Pride Manitoba” project, as it will help to educate more Manitobans about waste reduction, recycling, sustainability issues, and improve consciousness of environmental impact.

A variety of activities are on tap this year, including a $5 Fair Trade Pancake Breakfast, performances from MECCA Productions and Lucky Ned, face-painting, a tree-planting demonstration, displays from several environmental stewardship organizations, giveaways of tree seedlings and compost, and various prize draws.

This year’s event will also serve to officially launch the “Incredible Edible Brandon” initiative, a unique multi-organization program that will see sponsored planter boxes placed in the City’s downtown and cared for by volunteers, with the fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs grown in these beds available for FREE public consumption. Proceeds from the Eco Day in May $5 Fair Trade Pancake Breakfast (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.) will be put towards the “Incredible Edible Brandon” initiative. As such, Eco Day in May organizers are pleased to have the May 27th event recognized by Fair Trade Canada as an official Fair Trade Event.
