Released in partnership by the Province of Manitoba and the City of Brandon

BRANDON—Today, the Honourable MaryAnn Mihychuk, Minister of Employment, Workforce and Labour, the Honourable Drew Caldwell, Minister of Municipal Government, and Brandon Mayor Rick Chrest celebrated the start of construction on the Brandon Municipal Airport Expansion/Redevelopment Project.

“I’m thrilled that this expansion is happening now. It is good news on so many levels including the jobs it will create,” said Minister Mihychuk. “I also look forward to working closely with partners like the province so we can help workers improve their skills and get high-quality jobs.”

“The province is pleased to be a partner in this exciting redevelopment at the Brandon Municipal Airport,” said Minister Caldwell. “Brandon is a centre for economic activity in Westman and this project will continue to support the city by making it easier and more comfortable to come and do business in the city.”

The passenger terminal redevelopment project will involve the renovation and expansion of the existing terminal to three times its current size, resulting in improved passenger flow and the ability to accommodate future growth needs. It will enhance safety and security for passengers and employees alike by increasing traveller and baggage capacities in processing and secure areas. Additionally, the project will also help improve the airport’s information technology infrastructure by installing fibre optic cable to allow for fast and reliable broadband connectivity.

The redevelopment will increase the efficiency of passenger processing and provide a substantial increase in amenities and comfort for end users as well as increase capacity for the flow of goods and services as well as business and leisure travel.

“I don’t think there is a single person flying in and out of the Brandon Municipal Airport who isn’t looking forward to the day when we can throw the doors open on an expanded terminal building, complete with the space, amenities, and comforts of a modern airport,” added Mayor Rick Chrest, City of Brandon. “Once complete, our improved airport terminal building will better serve passengers of our daily flights to and from Calgary, and will auger well for the additional air service options in the future.”

The Government of Canada and Province of Manitoba will each be contributing up to $2,906,200 toward the project, which was approved under the New Building Canada Fund’s Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component-National and Regional Projects program, while the City of Brandon will cover the remainder of the costs associated with the project. The City of Brandon’s total budget for the project is $8,793,600. Project completion is anticipated by the end of 2016.
