Brandon Municipal Airport FAQ’s

Q: How often is the airport used?

A: All the time! In fact we host almost 25,000 take offs and landings each year!

Q: So who uses the airport?

A: We see a wide variety of aircraft each and every day, including corporate aircraft, private planes, Medevac/air ambulance, military aircraft and training flights. From time to time, flights are diverted to Brandon from other airports – this is becoming increasingly popular since the installation of the ILS.

Q: I have heard that the airport has recently installed the ILS; what exactly is that and why is it beneficial?

A: An instrument landing system (ILS) is a ground-based system that provides precision guidance to an aircraft approaching and landing on a runway, using a combination of radio signals and high-intensity lighting arrays to enable a safe landing during low ceilings or reduced visibility due to fog, rain, or blowing snow. This is beneficial to the Brandon Municipal Airport as it allows much greater consistency in landing, especially considering the weather that we normally experience.

Q: Can I catch a plane from Brandon Municipal Airport?

A: Yes! Perimeter Aviation offers flights to Dauphin and Winnipeg twice every weekday. For more information, please visit www.perimeter.ca.

Q: How many people work at the airport?

A: Currently, the City of Brandon employs three people at the airport. These employees are trained as first responders in the event of a critical incident with an aircraft. In addition to this emergency role, they are responsible for ensuring that the runway is bare and dry 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so that aircraft may land in most weather conditions. This is especially important when we are expecting a medevac or diverted flight. In the summer, the acres of grass surrounding the runways must be constantly cut short to meet regulations.

Q: How many runways are there?

A: There are two intersecting runways at the airport, with the primary runway being 6500 feet long and the secondary being 3000 feet. The primary runway is specifically designed to provide service to 737’s.

Q: What other services are available at the airport?

A: A wide range of aviation related services are available through our partners at Maple Leaf Aviation and the Brandon Flying Club, including fuel, deicing and maintenance.
