Brandon City Council Briefs (April 16)
Highlights of the April 16, 2012 Regular Meeting of Council
- City Council approved the installation of consistent “No Smoking” signage for all outdoor recreation facilities within the City of Brandon’s jurisdiction. The decision followed a request by South Centre ward councillor Garth Rice to have administration investigate the possibility of enforcing a no-smoking bylaw in such outdoor recreation areas, similar to the City of Winnipeg. However, Council agreed that the City would place consistent signage in such areas and then monitor compliance.
- City Council approved the bid by Crestline Coach to supply four new Paratransit (Handi-Transit) buses, including additional safety and operating equipment, at a cost of $405,926.10, not including GST. The four buses will replace aging units.
- City Council approved the bid of Team Eagle Ltd. for the supply of one new Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Vehicle, at a total cost of $618,800.00, not including GST. Once in place next spring, the new rig will be stationed at the Brandon Municipal Airport and will replace a unit that is nearly 30 years old.
- City Council approved the closure and conveyance of the north/south public lane in Block 71, Plan 2 BLTO, located north of Rosser Avenue and west of 3rd Street, to Westman Kiwanis Court Inc. The land will be taken in as part of the non-profit group’s plans to build a 38-suite affordable housing apartment complex.
- City Council gave final approval to the 2012 Tax Levy by-law, which now allows for the issuing of 2012 property tax bills and the subsequent collection of taxes.
- First reading was given to two bylaws: A) to amend the Fee Schedule By-law to allow for rate amendments based on the level of service offered and B) to amend Schedule “B” of the Vacant and Derelict Building By-law to increase the effectiveness of the by-law’s enforcement.
