Brandon Planning and Building Department Sees Huge Spike in Permit Values in 2011
Brandon, MB – A number of large-scale projects that broke ground in Brandon last year contributed to a jump in the construction value of permits issued by Brandon’s Planning and Building Department of 78%.
The City of Brandon Planning and Building Department processed a total of 1,005 permits in 2011 for construction projects worth a total of $160.2 million. That’s up significantly in dollar value from the 949 permits that represented $90 million in construction value processed in 2010.
“A number of high profile projects in the industrial, educational/institutional and commercial sector helped push up the overall construction value of permits issued last year,” explains the City of Brandon’s General Manager of Development Services Ted Snure. “For example, the Brandon Police Service’s new building, Brandon University’s Healthy Living Centre, the YMCA’s downtown redevelopment and Phase 3 of the City of Brandon’s Industrial Wastewater Plant were all significant projects that began construction in 2011. The City of Brandon experienced the type of construction in those sectors in 2011 that positions us well for future growth.”
When combined, industrial, educational/institutional and commercial construction projects accounted for just under $100 million of the total $160.2 million construction values last year.
Meantime, the value of residential permits issued in Brandon improved slightly in 2011, sitting at $53.4 million, up approximately $3 million from 2010.
An increase of the number of dwelling units constructed in Brandon was also seen in 2011. A total of 341 dwelling units came on stream in 2011, compared with the 266 units seen the year before.
“The growth we saw last year in the industrial, educational/institutional and commercial sectors are typical examples of the types of expansion that often follows the type of residential growth Brandon has seen in the past five years,” Snure noted. “With the steady growth we are seeing in the residential construction sector, that cycle of construction is on track to continue.”
