Brandon City Council Briefs (January 23)
Highlights of the January 23, 2011 Regular Meeting of Council
- Brandon City Council heard a delegation from Harvey Douglas, a board member with the Western Manitoba Non-Profit Seniors Housing Cooperative, thanking the City and all its other partners for their support. The group is readying to “break ground” next month on its first affordable housing development in the City of Brandon, a $5.8-million, 34-unit complex on McDiarmid Drive.
- Brandon City Council heard a delegation from Cam Clark, President of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce, on the issue of the proposed 2012 Budget. Mr. Clark asked Council to consider business owners, homeowners and the community’s overall capacity to pay for any property tax increases as it continues its discussion and debate around the budget.
- Brandon City Council gave approval to the City’s Poverty Committee request to send a letter to the Provincial Government reiterating the need for an increase in the shelter allowance and asking for reconsideration of its recent withdrawal of support for the offering of “off-peak” bus passes to Social Assistance clients in Brandon. As the Province is no longer supporting the “off-peak” program, it has recently been eliminated by Brandon Transit.
- Brandon City Council authorized city administration to move forward with a paving project this year on Parker Boulevard from 6th Street North to 17th Street North (approximately 2 kilometres of roadway). A provincial grant of $109, 850 (50 % of the total project cost) will be requested through the Manitoba Department of Infrastructure and Transportation’s 2012 Grant-In-Aid Program.
- A motion was passed to reschedule three dates for regular City Council meetings in June and October of 2012 to accommodate scheduling conflicts/clerical corrections. A full list of City Council meeting dates for 2012 can be found by visiting www.brandon.ca/council-information/meeting-dates.
- City Council gave first reading to three bylaws: one to close and give a portion of Lori Road to the Province of Manitoba for use by Assiniboine Community College; one to create a Community Revitalization Fund that would provide support to projects that revitalize the Downtown community, encourage economic development, enhance social and cultural development or preserve heritage properties; and one to rename streets within the Kingsway Trailer Court as Acorn Bay, Butternut Bay and Chestnut Way.
- Mayor Shari Decter Hirst gave notice of Council’s intent to meet at a special meeting on Feb.7th for the purposes of considering further amendments to the proposed 2012 budget.
