Koch Fertilizer Enhances Rail Safety on 17th Street East
Brandon, MB – Koch Fertilizer Canada has completed installation of an automated warning system on the rail crossing at the entrance to the Koch Fertilizer facility on 17th Street East. The new warning system, paid for by Koch Fertilizer, is expected to be operational Friday, November 4.
The City of Brandon is extremely pleased that the company has worked with it to enhance safety in the area of the rail crossing.
“Integrating the needs of motorists for a safe and effective system of streets and the requirements for Brandon’s industrial citizens to use the same street system to meet their supply and shipping needs requires the cooperation exhibited by Koch Fertilizer Canada with the installation of the automated railway crossing devices,” says Brandon’s Director of Development Services Ted Snure. “The City of Brandon is proud to have worked with Koch Fertilizer Canada in achieving this enhanced level of safety for those in the community who use 17th Street East in their day to day travels.”
The City of Brandon would like to caution all motorists to be attentive as they encounter this new automated rail crossing.
As per the Manitoba Highway Traffic Amendment Act, the driver of a vehicle approaching a railway crossing shall stop the vehicle before proceeding across the crossing if:
- a "stop" or "arrêt" sign is erected at the crossing;
- a clearly visible electrical or mechanical traffic control device at the crossing is signalling the proximity or passing of a railway train;
- a crossing gate is lowered or partly lowered, or a flag person is signalling the proximity or passing of a railway train; or
- a railway train is in dangerous proximity to the crossing and is giving an audible signal or is visible.
