Youth Advisory Council - Upcoming Information Session
Brandon’s Community Services department is putting the call out for motivated, dynamic youth aged 15-25 years who have a desire to help shape and enhance their city.
The city would like to move forward with the creation of a Youth Advisory Committee later this year. A core group of 30 to 40 youth would be needed to sit on the committee, which will include an executive, as well as youth centre, policy and government sub-committees. The committee will work with the City of Brandon’s Community Services staff to ensure a youth voice is being considered by the city’s decision-makers.
“Our youth today are more informed, well-educated and want a say in their future,” says Richard Greer, the City of Brandon’s Community Development Coordinator. “We are simply giving them a venue to have their voices heard.”
The formation of a youth advisory committee was one of 17 recommendations contained in the City of Brandon’s Youth Plan, adopted by Brandon City Council in February of 2010. Once formed, Brandon’s Youth Advisory Committee will be the driving force behind the development, creation and implementation of another of the Youth Plan’s recommendations - a Youth Centre.
“Youth Centres all over Canada are playing a pivotal role in the development of their youth and we want the same opportunities for the young people of Brandon,” Greer said. “A Youth Centre in Brandon will focus on the educational, recreational and social development of our youth through structured, organized activities.”
Two informational/recruitment sessions about the youth advisory committee are set for this month at the Riverbank Discovery Centre, one on Thursday, November 10th and the other on Thursday, November 24th. Each will begin at 6pm, with free food provided for all those that attend.
Interested youth aged 15-25 are asked to RSVP their attendance at their preferred informational session by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by calling 729-2234.
