City to Offer Free Bus Service on NYE

Thanks to generous sponsorship from Manitoba Public Insurance and local media outlets Westman Communications Group with CKLQ 94.7 STAR FM, Astral Media and the Brandon Sun, the City of Brandon is pleased to announce it will be offering free transit service from 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve to 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

From 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve to 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Brandon Transit will run its buses on a regular modified (hourly) service. During those hours, it will be free to get on or off the bus at any of a participating route’s designated stops.

This is the first year that Brandon Transit has offered a free service to party-goers who wish to partake of New Year’s Eve festivities and return home safely after their celebrations are over.

“Brandon Transit was excited to initially be offering extended regular bus service until midnight this New Year’s Eve, but we were still extremely keen on finding corporate sponsorship to enable us to provide service to the after-midnight crowd,” says the City of Brandon’s Transportation Director Tim Sanderson. “Mere days ago, we put the call out for the corporate sponsorship necessary to make that happen. That call has been answered and we couldn’t be happier with the partnerships we’ve been able to forge. ”

Starting the ball rolling on the free service was Manitoba Public Insurance, which stepped up with the initial offer to pay for the additional operating costs to keep the buses running from 12 a.m. to 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

“The availability of buses and extended hours provides another option home for people who have been out celebrating,” says Marilyn McLaren, President and Chief Executive Officer of Manitoba Public Insurance. “Making our roads safer and reducing alcohol-related deaths and injuries is a priority of our Corporation.”

Media sponsors Astral Radio, the Brandon Sun and Westman Communications Group with CKLQ 94.7 STAR FM have generously agreed to donate in-kind advertising and promotion of the free service in the weeks and days leading up to New Year’s Eve.

In addition, Brandon Transit has elected to waive all fares during the NYE/NYD program to encourage ridership on a night where getting home safely should be everyone’s top priority.
