A Solid Waste Collection Fact Sheet
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
- The City of Brandon’s Sanitation Section would like to advise the public that proposed changes to the Solid Waste Collection System are not scheduled to come into effect on Jan.1st, 2012.
- While a report detailing a number of proposed changes to the system was approved by Brandon City Council on Dec.19th, 2011, the changes will not be made until a comprehensive public feedback and public information campaign has been completed.
- It is anticipated that the requirement for refuse and recycling bins to be removed from back lanes on the same day as collection will be implemented in late spring of 2012. Such a change requires the amending of the City of Brandon’s Solid Waste Collection and Disposal Bylaw (No.6965), along with completion of a public information campaign.
- A set-out/set-back service is and will continue to be provided by the City of Brandon for residents with mobility/geographic restrictions which prevent them from moving their bins off the back lane.
- The issue of collection service for multi-family properties is one that will require extensive public consultation with those affected by the proposed changes. Any changes to such collection will need to be approved by City Council prior to implementation and are not expected to be implemented until the fall of 2012 or early 2013.
- Other proposed changes, like a voluntary residential organics (food and yard waste) collection program and the switch from a five-day collection schedule to a four-day collection schedule, are also scheduled for implementation in the fall of 2012 or early 2013. They, too, will be preceded by public information campaigns.
- Information on the public consultation and education process attached to the proposed changes will be rolled in early 2012. At that time, a dedicated e-mail address and phone number for public enquiries will be monitored by city staff.
- A complete overview of the proposed changes to the Solid Waste Collection System can be found at http://www.slideshare.net/CityBrandon/solid-waste-collection-system-proposed-changes-december-2011-council-meeting.
