Province to invest $500,000 in Canada Games Sportsplex Pool

Renewed Facility Will Mean Many More Years of Sports, Recreational Opportunities for Brandon Families: Premier

The province is investing $500,000 to help refurbish the Canada Games Sportsplex Pool and secure the long-term future of sports and recreation opportunities for western Manitoba families at the facility, Premier Greg Selinger announced here today.

“In addition to being home to the 1997 Canada Summer Games, the sportsplex is home to Manitoba’s only 50-metre swimming pool outside of Winnipeg,” the premier said. “This pool provides sports and recreation opportunities that improve the quality of life for families in Brandon and throughout western Manitoba.”

“I am delighted that the Province of Manitoba is making this commitment today to support the continued operations of the Sportsplex pool,” Brandon Mayor Shari Decter Hirst said. “The sportsplex is a critical component of Brandon’s recreation and events hosting capacity.”

The provincial investment and the city’s contribution to the project will result in $1 million in mechanical and technical improvements needed to keep the pool operating, the premier noted. Support for this project is provided from Manitoba’s $10-million extension of the Municipal Recreation Fund announced in Budget 2011.

Improvements to the sportsplex pool that will be supported by this funding include major mechanical and safety upgrades. These renovations will allow the sportsplex pool to provide many more years of use to residents of Brandon and the Westman region, Selinger said.

The sportsplex facility is used for general recreation, swim lessons, aquafit programs, competitive swim training including the home pool for the Brandon Bluefins Swim Club. In addition to training at the sportsplex, the Bluefins play host to a number of provincially sanctioned swim meets each year including the Junior Provincial Short Court Swim Championships.

“Good facilities are vital to the future of a successful competitive swim program in Manitoba,” said Swim Manitoba executive director Darin Muma. “I am delighted the province and the city have made this important investment in the future of our sport.”
