Public Urged To Stay Off Assiniboine River

With the public’s safety and the safety of all emergency response personnel top of mind, the City of Brandon would like to urge all members of the public to stay off of and away from the Assiniboine River during this time of warmer weather.

While the river surface is usually frozen at this time of year, the unseasonably warm temperatures have heightened the potential for thin ice or pockets of open water to form.

“Public safety is our No. 1 priority and we are always prepared to respond to emergency calls, including water rescue situations. However, with the recent and continuing warm weather, we are strongly asking everyone to please stay off, and away from, all bodies of water,” says Fire Chief Brent Dane. “It only takes a moment to suddenly find yourself in a life-threatening situation when it comes to uncertain ice conditions.”

“While the river surface may look frozen over at first glance, sustained warm weather like we’ve been experiencing lately has the potential to weaken ice on bodies of water,” adds Brandon’s Director of Emergency Management Brian Kayes. “The City of Brandon would like everyone to enjoy the warm weather in a safe manner that doesn’t put their lives or the lives of others at risk.”

The City of Brandon would also like to caution anyone who frequents the Assiniboine River Corridor area to exercise their animals to use extreme caution when walking close to the river and keep a close eye on their pet at all times.
