Past & Present Will Share the Spotlight During 2019’s ‘Doors Open Brandon’ Weekend

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon, Brandon’s Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee, and their many community partners will throw the doors open to some of the community’s most unique character buildings and functionally significant community sites during the 18th annual Doors Open Brandon weekend July 20th and 21st, taking place at various sites across Brandon.

This year’s Doors Open Brandon weekend event offers a mix of FREE self-guided and guided walking heritage tours on the afternoons of Saturday, July 20th and Sunday, July 21st.  The self-guided list features a mix of 19 privately-owned and publicly-owned properties, many of which have been able to keep their traditional charm while having been renovated and revitalized for the benefit of the community. For those who prefer a bit more direction through the weekend, five guided tours are also on offer, ranging from the City of Brandon’s No.1 Firehall and water treatment facility, to history and nature walk-and-talks in Brandon’s North and East Ends, to a special Saturday trip to Brandon University’s rooftop observatory.

City of Brandon Heritage Marketing Coordinator Caroline Stitt notes that this year’s event offers a great mix of activities that should pique the curiosity of young and old alike.

“Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, architecture expert, or maybe someone who just wants to catch a glimpse into the operations of an official civic facility, this year’s Doors Open event weekend offers you the chance to explore your interests while exploring Brandon,” says Stitt.

A paperless listing of this year’s tour locations and event schedule can be found on the Heritage Brandon website. Doors Open Brandon event booklets will also be available for public pick-up starting Monday, July 8th at Brandon City Hall (410-9th Street), the Riverbank Discovery Centre (545 Conservation Drive), Sobeys West (3409 Victoria Avenue) or at Heritage Co-op (1035 Richmond Avenue).

Also adding a new flair to this year’s Doors Open activities is an Open Brandon Bus Tour kick-off event set for the evening of Friday, July 19th. Departing from the A.R. McDiarmid Civic Complex at 6:30 p.m., the Open Brandon Bus Tour is a new and exciting way to tie together the Doors Open weekend with the City of Brandon’s Open Garden Tour event of the following weekend (July 27th and 28th). Billed as a bit of a mystery, the tour will take participants to three locations featuring “secret gardens and hidden heritage treasures” before ending at the Prairie Firehouse in downtown Brandon for refreshments and live music. Tickets for this bus tour kick-off event are $20 per person and must be purchased in advance by calling 204-729-2257 or clicking here.

“Our Open Brandon kick-off event allows those lucky enough to secure a spot on the tour bus to catch a glimpse of what is in store for both event weekends, while also providing access to a few exclusive gardens and heritage sites that will not be participating in the free weekend tours,” adds Stitt. “Our hope is that the bus tour will inspire people to come out to both the Doors Open and Open Garden Tours to further explore all that Brandon has to offer!”
