Update on Road Closure Within 000-Block of 9th Street

August 30, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon wishes to update the public and impacted residents and businesses on the ongoing closure of the majority of 9th Street between Pacific Avenue and Rosser Avenue. This emergency closure went into effect Monday, August 28th at 12 p.m. and applies to all pedestrian traffic along the westerly sidewalk, southbound vehicular traffic and all on-street parking from the rear lane between 838 Pacific Avenue and 19 – 9th Street to Rosser Avenue.

This road closure follows initial action by the City of Brandon to close the westerly sidewalk along this stretch of 9th Street earlier this summer to allow for the assessment of the integrity of the façade of the privately-owned structure located at 20 – 9th Street.

On Monday, August 28th, the City of Brandon was informed by a contractor hired by the aforementioned building’s owner that a portion of cornice had partially detached from the structure and, therefore, an emergency closure extending to the street became necessary. The contactor hired by the property owner then completed removal of the cornice; however, a subsequent inspection of the building by City of Brandon staff has identified multiple concerns with the building’s remaining facades. Therefore, the closure will remain in effect until an assessment by the property owner’s engineer is received and reviewed by the City of Brandon Development Services Division. The City of Brandon will actively work with residents and business owners affected by this closure to address any issues and will provide updated information to the public when it becomes available.

Again, the City of Brandon wishes to stress that the roadway remains closed for the safety of residents, businesses and pedestrians and asks for patience and cooperation during this process.
