Fee For Residential Loads (500 Kg or Less) In Place At Eastview Landfill

January 6, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon Sanitation Section wishes to inform all residential customers accessing the Eastview Landfill that, as of January 1st, 2017, a $2 flat entrance fee is being charged for all residential loads of refuse weighing 500 kilograms or less. Residential customers bringing in loads weighing 500 kilograms or more will not be charged this $2 entrance fee, but are, as always, charged tipping fees based on the weight and type of refuse in their load. The $2 flat entrance fee also does not apply to the drop-off of E-waste, the drop-off of used oil products at the ECO-Centre, or drop-offs at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot. As with all other existing fees at the Eastview Landfill, the new $2 flat entrance fee will be charged when a customer’s vehicle is weighed upon exit. The Eastview Landfill accepts payment by cash or debit directly on-site.

The fee was approved by Brandon City Council at its regular meeting on December 5th, 2016, and has been implemented to help offset the per tonne levy that the City of Brandon must pay into Green Manitoba’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Support (WRARS) Program each year. To put the value of  the entrance fee into perspective, the City of Brandon Sanitation Section saw approximately 46,000 residential customers entering the Eastview Landfill in 2015, 81% of whom brought in loads of 500 kilograms or less and thus did not pay anything for accessing this municipal service. It is the Sanitation Section’s hope that the introduction of this nominal entrance fee will more fairly distribute the cost of running the Eastview Landfill for all residents to access.

Full hours of operation at the Eastview Landfill can be found on the City of Brandon’s website here: http://www.brandon.ca/sanitation/landfill/landfill-overview.
