Season Ending For City’s Outdoor Winter Recreation Sites

March 10, 2015

Brandon, MB – The City of Brandon’s Community Services Department would like to advise that, due to the recent warm weather, the various outdoor winter recreation amenities located along the Assiniboine River corridor are closing for the season.

The public skating oval and Power Smart Waterfall of Lights display located along McGregor Avenue will be closed as of today, Tuesday, March 10th. The public is asked to respect the “Oval Closed” signage now in place in the area and to stay off the ice surface.

Rapidly-melting snow cover on the sledding hills at the Rec Centre and at Hanbury Hill has also forced their closure this week.

The cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails at the Rec Centre are melting quickly and are likely to be closed in the next few days, while the trails at Canada Games Park have already closed due to tree removal in the area.

The City of Brandon thanks all users of its outdoor recreational facilities for enjoying the spaces with respect and keeping them in good condition for all to enjoy.

At this time, City officials would also like to stress to the public the importance of staying off of and away from the Assiniboine River ice surface, as warmer spring weather heightens the potential for thin ice or pockets of open water to form.
