Recycling and Composting Information

Recycling and composting is more and more the right thing to do and for residents in Brandon it just got easier.

With assistance through the Canada Manitoba Infrastructure program the City of Brandon is now home to a state of the art Material Recovery Facility (MRF for short).

The MRF is located at the Eastview Landfill site and operates hand in hand with International Paper Industries.

All the refuse & recycling that is collected at your curb side rollout or from the large rear lane bin containers is taken via city trucks and dumped inside the MRF building then pushed into a set of conveyors to be hand sorted into recyclable material, compostable or land fill refuse.

The purpose of retrieving recyclable and compostable material is two fold.

1. It reduces the need for depleting our natural resources through the manufacturing process to create new cans, paper, cardboard and plastics while we are land filling the old.

2. It also reduces the volumes of refuse that is winding up in our landfill, thereby extending the life of the landfill, possibly to the point of never needing to locate another landfill. All landfills have a limited life span and are very expensive to relocate.

How do you participate??

There are two ways of getting your recyclable into the right hands. You may continue to use the recycle bins that are situated around town. There are seven (7) locations you can go to but if that is not convenient you can use the rear lane bins or your front street roll out carts.

We need everyone to really do their part to make this work. Although it is not difficult to participate there are a couple things that you do need to do to make it work.

We need you to do some separation of your refuse waste stream right at your home.

You’ll need some clear blue, clear, and regular black bags which are found at your local market place in the kitchen supply section.

Blue 1: All containers, plastics, metals, tin cans, milk or juice, margarine containers.
(no glass please as it is hard on the machinery and dangerous to the worker)

Blue 2: all paper products, newspaper, magazines, cereal boxes, cardboard etc.
Large cardboard boxes can be flattened and put in the bins loose)

Clear: yard waste, such as leaves, grass cuttings, plant material.
(tree trimmings should be in bundles less than 1 meter and placed in the containers for pickup)

Regular black: All other kitchen and household

That’s all you need to do. Place your full bags in the rear lane dumpsters or your front roll outs and we will look after the rest. You will find that the clear blue bags may take longer to fill up before you take them out to the dumpster. The Black bags you will likely want to take more regularly as it is spoilable kitchen waste.

This is a voluntary program. There are a great many people who wish to recycle and compost and this process will help them do that. If you choose not participate that’s your choice, but please do not destroy all the efforts of your neighbors and others that are recycling by putting unbagged or the wrong things into the dumpsters.
