Gardener - Volunteer Position
The City of Brandon is currently seeking qualified and interested citizens to volunteer for the position as gardener(s). Opportunities are available within a number of programs such as Brandon in Bloom, Spring Planting Days, Adopt a Flower Bed and Adopt a Park programs. The position(s) length of time is from May to September.
Responsibilities
- Assist in planting, weeding and deadheading of flowers
- Assist in planting of trees, shrubs and other plants
- Assist in pruning, cultivating and clearing of flowers, plants and trees
- Assist in fall cleanups and spring preparation
- Any other maintenance of public flowerbeds, gardens and parks
Experience and Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Gardening knowledge would be an asset but not necessary
- Planning, organizing and project coordination skills
- Independent and able to work with limited supervision
- Able to follow safety precautions when on site
- Able to follow direction and policies at all times
- Enthusiastic about gardening and landscaping
Volunteer Requirements
- Must have own method of transportation
- Must be willing to give a one-year commitment
- Must be able to volunteer six to ten hours per month
- Must have good written and verbal communication skills
- Must have own gardening tools and safety gear necessary to complete the task at hand and to varying weather conditions
- Report to all scheduled shifts and meetings in a punctual and professional manner
- Notify the Coordinator in advance if unable to attend shift
Supervision
- All volunteers will be responsible to the City of Brandon Community Services Department and City of Brandon Parks Department
- Some supervision may be provided by senior volunteers with two (2) years experience
- Volunteers may be asked to cooperate in an annual review and assessment of the Volunteer Development Program and their overall experience volunteering with the City of Brandon
