Lifesaving Society Aquatic Leadership Courses The Lifesaving Society of Manitoba has been in existence for over 96 years and in this time, has taken an active role in providing training and resources to educate the general public and offer aquatic programs to Lifesaving Society affiliates, such as Brandon's Community Sportsplex, in an effort to train individuals to become water smart. The Sportsplex is proud to be offering Manitoba Lifesaving Society's lifesaving, lifeguarding, and instructing courses to anyone wishing to develop or instruct aquatic lifesaving and fitness skills, as well as to those wishing to pursue a lifeguarding or instructing career. STEP 1 (optional): Bronze Star award (includes CPR A) Course description: Bronze Star is an alternate pre-requisite to Bronze Medallion and excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and with partners. They learn CPR and develop water smart confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. Cost: $85.00 STEP 2: Bronze Medallion Award (includes Lifesaving Emergency First Aid) Course description: Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education, judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Candidates learn: - tows, carries, and defense and release methods in preparation for the challenge of increased risk in rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Candidates learn how to do child CPR and how to manage spinal injured victims in shallow water. They also develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. In addition to Bronze Medallion, candidates also receive their Lifesaving Emergency First Aid (LEFA) certificate. Included in the LEFA course is airway management and CPR for an adult, child, and infant, as well as bleeding management and treatment for shock. Cost: $150.00 STEP 3: Bronze Cross Award (includes Lifesaving Standard First Aid) Course description: Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is the pre-requisite award for all advanced training programs including the National Lifeguard Service (NLS) award and the Lifesaving Instructor (LSI mega course) certification. Candidates successfully completing the Bronze Cross course will also receive a CPR C certification. Cost: $150.00 Upon successfully earning a Bronze Cross award along with a Standard First Aid certification, candidates aged 17 years and over are recognized as a lifeguard now through to December 31, 2007 in the Province of Manitoba. **Candidates 16 years of age, or beginning January 1, 2008 all candidates over the age of 16 holding a current Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid certificate are and will be recognized as an assistant lifeguard in the Province of Manitoba. In order for 16 year olds, or beginning January 1, 2008 all candidates over the age of 16 holding a current Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid certificate wishing to be considered a lifeguard in the Province of Manitoba must successfully obtain the National Lifeguard Service (NLS) award. STEP 4: National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Award Course description: The NLS core content teaches the basic principles of lifeguarding in any aquatic situation and the pool option builds on the fundamental skills, knowledge, and values taught in the NLS core content to train lifeguards in safety supervision and rescue in a pool environment. Please Note: We will need a photocopy of your birth certificate or drivers license along with a copy of your current Standard First Aid (Level C CPR) certificate and a Bronze Cross certificate (doesn't need to be current) at the time of registration or it can be scanned/e-mailed at least 10 days prior to the course start date. If you already have a current Canadian Lifesaving Manual, a current Alert:Lifeguarding in Action manual, current National Lifeguard Award Guide, a barrier device and whistle with coil we will deduct the cost of all or each of these items from the total course cost. Brandon's Community Sportsplex instructor/guards are required to be a minimum of 17 years of age and hold the following minimum qualifications: - current Bronze Cross award - current Standard First Aid (CPR C) - current WSI certificate (see "how to become an instructor" section) It is strongly recommended that all applicants also hold a current NLS award and preference will be given to those candidates also currently holding certificates earned by completing the LSI mega course (see "how to become an instructor" section). Individuals 16 years of age may be hired as an instructor/guard if they hold a current NLS award, a current WSI certificate, and a current Standard First Aid (CPR C) certificate at minimum.
