STEP 2: Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certificate Course description: The WSI course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim Programs by: - focusing on how to effectively plan, teach, and evaluate the performance criteria; - applying information learned about the competencies in the AWSI course to the Red Cross Swim program content; - emphasizing stroke development, drills, and corrective strategies; - providing instructor candidates with opportunities to apply their teaching skills and knowledge through teaching experience assignments (may be scheduled concurrently with course or be assigned for completion after the course); - evaluating instructional emergency response skills Course Length: 25 hours + a minimum of 12 teaching experience hours to be completed during the course OR up to 6 months following the completion of the course. Course pre-requisites: 16 years of age as of final course date, Current AWSI certification Course materials: AWSI/WSI Red Cross Instructor binder Course expiry date: The WSI certification is valid for two years only from the original course date and candidates are required to attend a 4-hour re-certification clinic in order to remain certified to instruct the Red Cross Swim program. Upon successful completion of the WSI course along with successful completion of the teaching experience, candidates qualify to instruct the Red Cross Swim program (7 Pre-school levels, 10 Swim Kids levels & AquaAdults) Spring Session: Dates:
